Study Abroad Eligibility and Requirements

Study abroad programs are incredible learning opportunities! See if you're eligible to apply, then review some basic guidelines for traveling with CCBC.

Basic eligibility

Most study abroad programs are open to CCBC students, faculty, staff and other members of the community.

Your to-do list

Here are some items to consider before applying for a study abroad trip.

  • Review deadlines and health requirements specific to the trip. Some trips may require more physical activity than others.
  • If you need special accommodations for traveling, coordinate with our department to make sure these arrangements can be made.
  • Determine how you wish to earn credit for this experience.
    • You can either register for an associated credit course or you can complete specific academic assignments for a study abroad credential on your transcript.
    • Non-students are exempt from academic work for study abroad but can elect to pursue assignments for a study abroad credential.
  • Ensure you are eligible to travel or can obtain valid documents such as passports and proof of vaccinations. If you are not from the United States, ensure this trip does not interfere with your home country's laws.

Register and plan for payment.

  • If you're a CCBC student, now's the time to apply for extra financial aid for study abroad. See below for financial aid requirements.
  • Once you've been accepted for study abroad, you will be handed a payment slip. Keep this slip handy when you make your first payment at the Bursar's Office, and stay up to date with any additional payment deadlines for the program.
  • Understand that seniors may be charged additional fees for program insurance.

Here's what to expect three to four months before the trip.

  • Attend orientation or any mandatory meetings or class sessions. Parents and guardians are welcome to join orientation.
  • If you haven't already, obtain your passport, proof of immunizations and any other documentation needed to travel. Submit this information to the study abroad department as soon as possible and keep them safe when you travel.
  • Participants will travel on the same arranged group flight. However, if you absolutely need to book a separate flight, let us know as soon as possible and we will give permission on a case-by-case basis.

Expectations of travelers during the trip.

  • Take care of your luggage. CCBC is not liable for any lost luggage or additional bagging charges.
  • Keep your passport, ID or any other essential documentation secure. CCBC is not liable for any damage or loss of these items.
  • You are financially responsible for any physical damages or harm may occur at the hotel, classroom, or any facility.
  • You must attend all classes and meetings on time.
  • The facilities and activities are for the travel group only. Do not invite strangers or non-travelers to any facilities we use.
  • You are responsible for behaving properly, in accordance with Student Code of Conduct. We have the right to suspend you or send you home early if you do not behave properly — which could result in you not earning credit or receiving a refund.
  • In the case of a true emergency, you may borrow a small amount of funds from CCBC, but they MUST be repaid within a week after the trip. Otherwise, it will be added to your CCBC bill.

The study abroad experience doesn't end when you return!

  • If you are enrolled in an associated course or wish to earn a study abroad credential, you may have more academic assignments or class meetings to complete.
  • Students receving extra financial aid must complete an associated course for college credit. If not, they will be financially responsible for the class.
