The Benjamin Banneker Planetarium honors Benjamin Banneker, a free Black man from nearby Oella and a self-taught scientist who authored a series of almanacs in the 1790s.
The Planetarium is a classroom-sized facility (seating capacity: 65) that has been in operation since 1966. It is used primarily for college classes and shows for school groups as well as the community. The Planetarium now has a newly installed Evans and Sutherland Digistar digital projector, housed in a 10-meter dome planetarium.See our universe from a whole new perspective at the Banneker Planetarium.
Presented by Professor Dave Ludwikoski, Planetarium Director, these shows have been arranged for the general public to attend free of charge. In the event of inclement weather, please call 443.840.1711 for possible closings.
We offer free shows for elementary, middle, high or college school groups, during our fall and spring semesters. We also offer summer shows on a limited basis.
Our shows take place on weekdays at 10 a.m. Depending on the age group, shows run anywhere from 30-45 minutes. To book a show for your students, contact Anna Burgio.
