The Benjamin Banneker Planetarium honors Benjamin Banneker, a free Black man from nearby Oella and a self-taught scientist who authored a series of almanacs in the 1790s.
The Planetarium is a classroom-sized facility (seating capacity: 65) that has been in operation since 1966. It is used primarily for college classes and shows for school groups as well as the community. The Planetarium now has a newly installed Evans and Sutherland Digistar digital projector, housed in a 10-meter dome planetarium.
